  • created his own school of philosophy called “The Garden”
  • the first teacher of his era to accept female students
  • wrote over 300 works on philosophy
  • one of the first thinkers to think about how science should be done
  • helped his government figure out how democracy should work
  • very kind, even to his slaves, whom he considered fellow philosophers, and whom he later freed
